Volcanoes National Park is a located in northwestern Rwanda. It covers approximately 160 km2 of rainforest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the virunga mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo.
In addition to mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) which is famous for the park; Volcanoes national park is home to golden monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis kandti), Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta), buffaloes (Syncerus caffer), forest elephants, black-fronted duiker (Cephalophus niger), and bushbuck (Tragelaphus scriptus). The park also harbors 178 bird species including Dusky Crimson-Wing, Archer’s ground robin, francolins, Rwenzori double collared sunbird, red-faced woodland warbler, strange weaver, collared apalis and Rwenzori batis and many more.
Visitors to Volcanoes National Park enjoy activities like Mountain Gorilla trekking, Golden Monkey trekking, Dian Fossey’s grave, hiking various volcanoes (including Mount Bisoke, Muhabura and Mount Karisimbi), exploring the Musanze Caves, birdwatching, cultural tours, or simply relax and enjoy the scenic views.
